Based on in-depth interviews with over 100 couples, this book reveals five developmental stages that most relationships pass through: Romance, Power Struggle, Stability, Commitment, Co-Creation. The book is based on the Jungian notion, “marriage as a psychological relationship.” It takes the stance that the predictable challenges that arise between partners can be used for personal and couple spiritual evolution, and it offers skill-building tips and tools for successfully navigating the challenges and pitfalls of each stage. It was originally published in 1980, but the soft-cover edition is out-of-print. It has recently (2015) been revised to reflect the author’s current thinking on how to create intimacy and fulfillment. The book is full of real life examples of how couples can get stuck at any stage, along with effective tools for getting yourselves unstuck. There are two chapters for professional counselors who wish to integrate these tools into your couples therapy practice, plus a few sample workshop designs for workshop leaders who want to conduct trainings based on this material. There is also a chapter describing a number of fun growth activities that a couple can share to revitalize intimacy and deal with the predictable (and almost universal) challenges of each stage. Carl Rogers called the book “a compassionate and positive approach to marriage and partnerships.” George Bach recommended it for bringing “a much needed light of mutual caring into the darkness of our narcissistic times.”
